Rwanda has wonderful high elevation areas that have volcanic soil that make the growing of coffee plants a profitable engagement. The majority of coffee plantations or farms in Rwanda grow the Arabica coffee plant that is known as a bourbon plant.

Community Coffee from the U.S. and Union Coffee Roasters from the U.K. are both big purchasers of the Rwanda Maraba green coffee beans. The Fair Trade brand of the Rwanda Maraba green coffee beans is produced by the United Kingdom company.

When are the Rwanda Maraba green coffee beans Harvested

Many people like to know when the coffee beans from different areas are harvested so they can buy the freshest possible version of their favorite coffee beans.

The coffee plants grown in Rwanda put on their floral display between September and October. The hillsides come alive with the beautiful blossoms. The blossoms give way to the coffee fruit and it takes six to seven months before that fruit ripens to perfection. The green coffee beans from Rwanda are harvested from sometime in March until the end of May. This is unusual because at this time Rwanda is in the middle of their rainy season.

Hand-Picked

The Rwanda coffee beans are harvested by hand during the day and then taken to ‘washing areas’ in the evenings. Sometimes the coffee beans have to be transported several miles before they reach these washing areas.

The washing of the coffee beans is a part of the wet processing the beans are put through to separate the internal seeds (what we call coffee beans) from the red fruit they develop inside of.

At the washing areas the fruit of the plants are separated according to size and color. At the washing areas only the ripest of fruit is kept, so any fruit that is not a deep red color is rejected and the harvester/grower has to take the rejected fruits to another place to try and sell their coffee beans.

What Can I Expect from the Rwanda Maraba green coffee beans

If you have not tried the Rwanda Maraba green coffee beans then you are in for a delightful experience. If you combined the floral undertones that you get from Yirgacheffe and the high acidity that you get from the Kenya coffee beans you would come close to the creamy, silky liquid that is made from Rwanda Maraba.

When you get the first waft of the brewing coffee you will likely smell the sweetness of citrus blossoms like orange and lemon. When you sip the brewed nectar your taste buds will be transported to an island paradise of caramel streams surrounded by majestic fields of wild flowers. The coffee is naturally sweet and you should try drinking it with no additives. You want to experience the rich and full bodied liquid on its own before you mask any of the natural flavors with creamers or sweeteners.
