El Salvador San Mauricio Fair Trade Organic coffee wholesale price $6.27 per pound -ETA September '08- The San Mauricio region located in the mountainous Eastern region of El Salvador is dominated by agriculture. The elevation and topography create perfect conditions for coffee cultivation which is the principal production of the large landholders, cooperatives and small producers. The area where the coffee is grown is dedicated to chemical free cultivation, with crops such as corn, beans, vegetables and citrus fruits appearing next to the coffee plants. The coffee is grown under a rich canopy of shade trees, making the farms sanctuary to many neotropical migratory birds and other endangered local species.
The coffee is produced by a cooperative of small farmers. This cooperative of farmers suffered greatly from the civil war in El Salvador. They had to pay war taxes, and their coffee processing facilities were burned in the guerrilla attack in November 1989, thus leaving them unable to collect and process coffee during that period. During postwar times many cooperative members were kidnapped and extorted to pay ransoms to criminals who were mostly ex-militants. Most of these small producers are of Mayan ancestry and they dedicate their productions in the memory of their ancestors by continuing to grow and harvest their coffee in harmony and religious respect for the environment. Times continue to be difficult for these farmers due to the low prices of coffee. They were able to pay off debt caused by the war when coffee prices were high in 1994 due to the Brazil freezes, but have been unable to invest in renovating their farms, causing lower coffee production since. Social and economic development has been almost impossible for them as low prices continue. They have now formed an association of small coffee producers in order to provide support to the cooperative to overcome the problems of coffee production, administrative development and to export fair trade coffee. The terrible earthquakes in El Salvador have created more devastation for these people. The San Mauricio region was hit hard with over 500 homes destroyed and a number of people killed. This tragedy combined with low coffee prices, provides this fair trade coffee an opportunity to help this community!
The coffee is certified organic shade grown by the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) as well as being a fair trade coffee. It is of the Altura variety and is grown at 1200 meters. In the cup, the coffee is clean, medium body, slight acidity, and a mild fragrant aroma.
