The La Marzocco Company Tradition

La Marzocco have been making stylish and high quality espresso machines since 1927. Founded in Florence, Italy by brothers Guiseppe and Bruno Bambi, the company was named after Donatello’s famous mediaeval stone lion representing the free Republic of Florence, sculpted for the Medici papal palace in that city in 1420. The lion and Florentine lily have symbolized the Marzocco brand for over 90 years and have featured in of some of their most iconic products.

With a reputation for outstanding build quality, classic Italian design and innovation, the company can lay claim to some of the most important technological advances in specialty coffee equipment in the 20th century, including the first coffee machine with a horizontal boiler (launched in 1939), the first dual boiler system and the first advanced pressure profiling system. No other company has made a greater contribution to the modern day specialty coffee industry.

Craftsmanship and heritage have from the outset formed an integral part of the La Marzocco ethos. Guiseppe Bambi’s son Pier continued the family tradition as a product designer and engineer well into his 80s and the company’s commercial espresso machines are still manufactured to order in their factory in Tuscany. Every machine is hand finished to exacting standards with minute attention to detail.

Today they are exported to more than 100 countries worldwide, with Australia leading the way as the biggest international market, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom.

The first La Marzocco espresso machines were exported to the US in 1978 and the company continues to have a close association with Seattle where the headquarters of its US operations are located. For many years a Linea Classic machine graced the counter of every Starbucks store and you can still see this iconic machine in use today at the very first Starbucks location in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, although Starbucks have long since switched to fully automated Swiss machines.
