Ethiopia Reads: Coffee Fundraiser

Ethiopia Reads, a grassroots non-governmental non-profit organization, was founded to improve literacy and create a culture of reading in Ethiopia, in order to bring hope, vision and educational skills to this generation of Ethiopian children. In 2003, Ethiopia Reads opened Shola Children's Library in the capital, Addis Ababa. It was the country's first free library for children and now houses more than 15,000 books. Shola Children's Library is wildly popular: More than 200,000 children have visited the library since 2003. Six days a week, the library welcomes children between the ages of 4 and 18 years. In 2007 Ethiopia Reads opened 10 libraries in partnership with government, public and private schools throughout Addis Ababa and throughout Ethiopia. The ultimate goal is to open 100 libraries by 2010, bringing books, hope and joy to tens of thousands of children throughout Ethiopia. Ethiopia Reads provides training for librarians and teachers in Ethiopia so they can effectively manage new libraries and build children's literacy skills. Training is a vital part of creating and maintaining this dynamic and growing library system. Cheryl Space, Coordinator of Children's Programs at the Providence Public Library and Lara Ingham, Primary Grades Librarian at the Wheeler School, will be traveling as part of the educational team to help train local librarians in June 2008.
