The Espresso Machine History

The story of the espresso drink and the espresso machine history is quite interesting. A goat herder named Kaldi noticed one day that his goats were acting extraordinarily active after snacking on some red berries growing from some shrub. Out of curiosity, he tried some of the berries himself and found an extreme of energy suddenly bursting from within. A tired and hungry traveler witnessed the entire incident and brought some of the berries home where he had mixed with his drinks. The rest is then history.

The Italian Lugia Bezzer is said to have made the first espresso machine in 1901 in Italy. Initially nicknamed the “fast coffee machine,” the said espresso machine was his way to speed up his employees’ breaks. In 1905, however, Bezzer sold the espresso machine to Desidero Pavoni. Pavoni eventually designed and developed an espresso machine that utilized a piston pump that would force water into a tube and into the coffee.

By the start of the Second World War, further modifications and enhancements of the espresso machine were temporarily put to a stop. But after the war in 1946, the espresso machine production picked up and the regular espresso machine was produced commercially. Since then numerous companies have developed and manufactured various types and sort of the espresso machine, offering the global market with a wide selection providing different features, colors, styles, and prices. Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters provide a wide variety of coffee equipment including the espresso machine.

“Pulling” a shot is the popular term used to refer to the process of producing a shot of espresso. This is because the first lever espresso machine required the barista to pull down a handle to force hot water at some required pressure. To pull a shot of your favorite espresso using the espresso machine, one needs to fill a metal filter basket with at least 7 grams of ground coffee for a single shot or 12 grams for a double. Using about 180 N of force, the espresso is then tamped, forming a firm and hard puck of coffee. Holding the filter basket in an espresso machine is a portafilter. Pressurized water is then forced into the coffee found in the portafilter once the brewing process starts. Maintaining right water temperature in your espresso machine is significant as cooler water causes sourness while hotter water causes bitterness. Typically, serving temperature is controlled at around 60 to 70 degrees Celsius.

By the processes of extracting and emulsifying of the oils found innately in the ground coffee, an espresso machine is responsible for the rich syrupy beverage shot of espresso that coffee lovers long for. Variations in the fineness of the grind, the pressure used, and the water temperature in your espresso machine, a variety of espresso shots can be produced. And remember, consuming your espresso within 2 minutes after serving will give you coffee at its finest.

Fortunately, a wide selection of coffee equipment including your favorite espresso machine can be ordered online from many online shops like Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters.
