HEALTH BENEFITS OF COFFEE
According to a popular myth, coffee was originally discovered when a goat herder watched his animals become frisky after eating the berries of a bush. He tried the berries himself and found that they increased his alertness, stamina and energy level. As a result of this stimulating effect the berries were banned in 1511; the ban was overturned by a Turkish sultan in 1524. Almost from the beginning, the use of the coffee beverage in coffee houses where political unrest could be fomented seemed to be as much the reason for control of its use as health reasons.
At the same time as the health benefits of coffee were being touted, coffee was being hailed as the brew of the devil. The reason in both cases was the obvious result of the stimulation provided by coffee. Those who enjoyed the energized and focused characteristics of drinking coffee felt it was healthy. Those who viewed the stimulation as being unnatural were opposed to the product.
Use of the berries spread into Europe via the Dutch, who managed to smuggle some seedlings into Java where early plantations were established. In 1538, a German physician described the beverage as being used for all sorts of ailments, including those of the stomach.
Late 13th century users of the roasted coffee bean in Arabia were women who drank the beverage to alleviate menstrual discomfort. Interestingly enough, the beverage was roasted and brewed by the men and given to the women.
By the time the use of the drink and the planting of plantations had spread into Yemen and then into Turkey, coffee was considered medicinal. It was also consumed in ritual ceremonies and was considered by some Turkish men to be an aphrodisiac.
The Chinese gained access to coffee by way of India, again with plants smuggled out of Arabia into India and cultivated there. Indian manuscripts describe the health benefits of coffee as being a stimulant, diuretic, digestive aid, and reducing amount of blood in the brain. It was recommended for treatment of asthma, whooping cough, cholera, diarrhea, and malaria.
Chinese medicine used roasted coffee beans as a treatment for liver ailments and for gallbladder problems. The red color of the coffee berry indicated it could be used for treatment of the heart associated with mental acuity. The bitter taste meant it was effective in purging the gallbladder and promoting urination. Coffee is also somewhat sweet, which according to Chinese means coffee is a tonic for the spleen.
Today, scientific studies are going over some of the same ground that previous civilizations have learned about the health benefits of coffee. There are positively identified results in treatment or prevention of several illnesses which can be attributed to coffee drinking. A prime example is the positive correlation between coffee drinking and reduced risk of diabetes. The same type of correlation exists between drinking coffee and reduced risk of Parkinson's disease. Other preventative ties include cirrhosis of the liver, gallstones, and colon cancer.
It seems unlikely that scientists will ever recommend that you do overtime shifts at Starbucks to cure disease, but it is also true that there may be more benefits in drinking 2-3 cups of coffee daily that we have been willing to admit.
