A Taste For Flavored Coffee
Coffee has been around for centuries, but as the birthdays add up for one of the world's favorite beverages, the number of available flavored coffees are beginning to add up as well. As fast as you can say "double chocolate raspberry hazelnut decaf", another flavored coffee has been added to the lineup at a coffee shop somewhere on the planet. The great thing about all of these flavored coffee choices is that as tastes and moods change, you can adapt your coffee preferences accordingly. The knowledgeable folks at Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters can satisfy whatever mood you're in with the perfect flavored coffee.
So what came first; the flavored coffee, or the customer demand? That is a question for the ages, but it is fair to say that coffee lovers were flavoring their own coffee at home long before the commercial manufacturers caught up to the flavored coffee trend. Around 1990, consumers who loved hot beverages were becoming bored with traditional coffee when the primary choices were decaf, black, cream, and sugar as the only options. Coffee drinkers then began turning to tea and hot chocolate as they became bored with java, and that forced the coffee makers to become competitive and meet the customer demand or face the consequences. Hence, the birth of flavored coffee occurs and gives other hot beverages a definite run for the...um...filter. The experts at Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters were definitely on the right track.
On a more historic note, true flavored coffee is thought to have originated in Ethiopia with the Arabica coffee bean specifically, where it still grows wild in the Highlands area. Natives were really looking to spice up the coffee for more ceremonial rather than flavor reasons, and would take the green coffee beans and roast them slowly over the open fire to begin the art of creating their carefully flavored coffee. They would then add spices like cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and citrus rind for the aroma and healing good luck powers they were thought to bring. After grinding the beans and flavorings together, flavored coffee became the end result, and it was a nice benefit the beverage was pleasant to the taste buds as well. Other spices and extracts were added as the ritual became more westernized and the resulting flavored coffee became more individualized. Each of us at Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters take just as much pride in our creation of flavored coffees as those early gourmets.
Flavored coffee is as unique as the drinker and may come warm, iced, or even frozen in many cases. Even chain restaurants are getting in on the craze and behemoths like McDonald's now have some of the best iced coffee and flavored coffee on the market and at a very reasonable price. In many instances, the term "flavored coffee" is synonymous with gourmet coffee, and depending on the flavors used may command a hefty price. For the most part, however, flavored coffee is a way to appeal to more people, keep coffee aficionados from getting bored, and add a unique touch to your daily routine. And if you're feeling particularly adventuresome, you might try one of the flavored coffee ice creams, yogurts, candies, and other sweet treats that continue to evolve from our obsession.
