Meet the Coffee Beans
Coffee beans seem like a simple enough commodity in today's world economy, but when you delve into the actual history, the twists and turns of the story read more like a Hollywood script. For java lovers everywhere, coffee beans will take on a whole new meaning once you learn the long, difficult path the tiny, innocent looking fruit took to get to your mug. The folks here at Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters have a direct connection to this deep history, and are proud of this heritage.
The story begins centuries ago in the more mountainous regions of Caffa, Ethiopia when a sheep herder named Kaldi noticed his flock acting oddly after eating unusual "cherries" on the hill. The hyperactivity experienced by the sheep was also felt by the herder once he tried them, but he was scolded for his actions by a passing monk who called the beans "the devil's fruit". Shortly thereafter, the monks discovered the fruit allowed them to stay awake for their prayers and gave them more energy for their daily tasks. The Caffa beans, or coffee beans, became a regular part of the towns diet, and the popularity quickly spread as did the varied ways to partake of the coffee bean's benefits, although their use was still kept a secret by many. Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters takes its name from the herder who originally discovered coffee beans with his four legged friends.
The long road from Ethiopia to your table was far from over as many Christians thought that coffee was thought to be the 'drink of the devil' and banned from many churches and homes. Pope Vincent III wanted to try the drink before he completely banished it, and after a sip, baptized the beverage declaring "coffee is so delicious it would be a pity to let the infidels have exclusive use of it." Visit other pages at Kaldi.com for more information on the many delicious varieties of this once banished beverage.
As the coffee beans made their way to Arabia, the natives monopolized their use despite the fact the beans grew naturally in Ethiopia. A tribe known as Galla used the beans in what we would now consider archaic, by wrapping animal fat around the coffee beans as the primary source of energy when conducting raids. The Arabs guarded the secret of the coffee beans as a delicacy of their own, and exporting out of the Muslim nations was considered a high-end crime by the government. One daring Arab, Baba Budan, smuggled a large number of the coffee bean plants out of the country and started a farm in Myesore, India where his descendants grow them to this day. Lucky for coffee lovers that these brave souls smuggled coffee beans out of the country allowing Kaldi Gourmet Coffee Roasters to provide you with the best coffee products available.
The Turks were the first group to use the coffee beans as the basis for a beverage. They would harvest the coffee beans, grind them and mix them with a variety of spices which may included cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, or anise, and then mix it with water before boiling. The drink was then able to be carried with them on long, cold hunting trips and give them the stamina needed to stay warm for long periods of time. The experts at Kaldi.com know that even a trip to the mall is made better with a good cup of coffee that starts with the best gourmet coffee beans.
